It was been recognizing that both the importance of service sector in Korean economy and the service trade volume has been rapidly growing. Travel export is ranked as the second in terms of service export right after private sector.
The Korean service trade balance has been deficit since late 1970 which the figure was recorded in blue color. Among the service trade, overseas travel occupied 5.3% in 1970 and 19.4% in 1993. The overseas travel export volume has been increased from 31.2 million dollars in 1971 and 3,853.9 million dollars in 1994. In case of the overseas travel import, the volume was 14.8 million dollars in 1971 and 5,052.7 million dollars in 1994. As this figure
shows, the overseas travel import has been tremendously increasing.
The travel destinations of the Korean travelers are heaviliy centered to the U.S. and Japan in terms of both export and import. The export to these two countries has been reached 96% of the total export and 88 % of the total import. The method of constant market share analysis has adopted to analyze the change factors of the service export of Korea from 1990 to 1993. This analysis revealed that the factor related increase in world import demand and
competitive power are the two major factors in service export.
The actual numbers are 29.06% and 19.13%, respectively. And it also turned out to be that export market expansion is the sector which demands the most remedy. According to the analysis of the imensiIy of regional export for the 1990 and 1993, there is positive correlation between the regional occupancy rate and the intensity of the regional export. This means travel export is focusing on the countries which export gravity is high. The findings of the travel balance analysis show that it is expecting that the travel balance deficit will be increasing which started late 1980.
