Strategies for Attracting Transhipment Container Cargoes from China by Kwangyang Port
Due to recent environment for shipping and port, such as bigger ship size and more fast speed of ship, competition among ports is fierce, The economic effects of transhipment cargo handling on domestic economies are of importance. Therefore most countries are making great efforts to attract those cargoes supporting for economic incentives such as reduction of terminal handling cargoes and extension of free time at port.
Kwangyang port is ideally situated to attract transhipment cargoes from/to China, particularly northern part of Shanghai port, most of them have some limits to deepen draft necessary to accommodate over 5th generation containership.
This paper aims to suggest some strategies for attracting transhipment cargoes for Kwangyang port to become a hub-port in Northeast Asia. The import points suggested by the author are as following;
First, to maintain current tariff level, lower than Busan port
Second, to activate aggressive marketing for shipping companies, forwarders etc.
Third, to enforce strategic alliance with foreign shipping companies Fourth, to open the Korea-China shipping route.
Fifth, to establish free trade zone or tax-free zone
However before considering the attraction of transhipment cargoes from Chinese ports, we suggest the mid and long term master plan to supply more port facilities especially storage space.
