There have been quite a lot of research results about the change of container port system in the world. However, detailed and in-depth analysis of the subject is insufficient. In this study, I examined relevant discussions carried out so far and tried to figure out possible development direction of Northeast Asian container port system. Until recently, it had been widely acknowledged that hub & spoke system is prevailing trend of development of container port system in the world. But, since early 2000’s the future of hub & spoke system as a dominant shipping network has been questioned in several literatures. Especially in the Northeast Asian region, quite a large number of small feeder ports have grown into regional gateway ports which are directly served by mother ships. As a result, the transhipment ratio in the ports has been substantially decreased. However, many of the gateway ports, which are positioned at the crossings of trunk routes, assume the role of relay center forming so-called “multipolar port system”. The multipolar port system has been formed by complicated connecting network of the gateway ports in the region. In this study, such a trend in container shipping network was closely examined.
In the meantime, there has been an argument that “new hub & spoke system” will be established as growth of ship size progresses in the future. In the new system suggested in the relevant research works, 3~4 mega ports in Northeast Asia are to act as logistics center where transhipment demand will be concentrated. Such an argument is also discussed here.
