Nationalistic discourse has always been a ruling ideology in post-war Korean literature. The rapid modernization process undertaken since the start of the 1960s gave rise to much confusion in the minds of the public in terms of national identity; and in turn, various discourses about national subjectivity started to have great appeal to the public. Under these circumstances, the question of 'national identity' tOok on the status of a leading discourse of the time, not only within the nationalist movement lead by the undemocratic government that suppressed all opposing discourses, but also within the democratic movement that opposed such government.
In Nam Jung-hyun's early works, the female body - especially such body parts as the buttocks - works as a symbol that reveals the author's critical outlook on the modernization project carried out by the government.
Experiencing 4.19, Nam Jung-hyun's critical outlook expands and leads to the discovery of an active subject who can stand up against colonialistic invasion of foreign powers. Nam Jung-hyun's Bunji changed the course of Korean literature in that it was the first opposition against the Westernization process lead by the government under the slogan of nationalism. However, the advent of resistant nationalism was made possible only by defining women as the site of colonial invasion, and redefining men as their representatives. As a result, women became the shadow figures eclipsed by men who reconstructed their subjectivity through the nationalist ideology of the colonizer and the colonized. Such subordinate beings are rediscovered in Korean literary history in the name of 'Minjoong' and becomes a basic source of imagination for illuminism and androcentrism.
