Mansejeon(『萬歲前』) has been highly evaluated in terms of its substantial representation of colonial period. Now it is regarded as one of the canons in Korean literature. This thesis attempts to analyse Manejeion from the postcolonial point of view instead of previous realistic viewpoint.
Lee In-hwa, a student studying abroad in Tokyo, is a paradoxical being because he is an intellectual in colony as well as an enlightened person who has a modem education. Lee In-hwa leaves for Korea, after receiving a telegram telling him of his wife's critical condition. On his way to Korea, he suffers from extreme splir personality because he is treated discriminatingly from Japan. However, he is the very person who considers Korean people hypocritical, cowardly, insidious, and addicted to alcohol and smoking. He also describes Korean as uncivilized people.
Lee In-hwa's intricate psychology shows the fact that how the negative image of Korean created by modern Japan has great effect on Korean intellectuals. Japanese intellectuals must invent another primitives or barbarians in Asia in order to escape from westerner's relegating Japan to uncivilized nation.
'The colonial consciousness' resulting from 'the colonized unconsciousness' spreads through journalism, which made it possible to create 'Choseon-ness'. The inverted Orientalism internalized in Korean intellecruals offers them critical viewpoint on deep-rooted Korean feudalism.
