In modernization, all society has changed. and when a period of ebb of some ideology, the culture has substituted it. As a necessity, culture is reflects the structure of society. modern culture is a mediation of modern society. In capitalistic production mode, the culture reflects the capitalistic property, It is natural that consumption culture is happening by consumption of goods.
In 1930' Kyeongseong(Seoul) has underwent same process. Though colonial, Kyeongseong has been urbanizing whit the sudden increase in population, and it is possible to read s symptom of modernization. We may see the symptom in popular novel which had published serially in a daily newspaper. That is Kim Namcheon's《Aquarium of love》(사랑의 수족관),Yu Jinoh's《Hwasngbo》(화상보) and Lee Taejun's 《The second fortune》(제2의 운명)
In these novels, the first symptom is tbe cars. Car is used in privace usage in contrast with trains. Car symbolizes the one's social position and represents individualistic and emotional the inner, that is a point of difference to trains forcing the great ideological discourse.
The second is the fashion. consumption of foods, clothes, cosmetics, etc has established in fashion. It is consumed in luxurious desire, not in basic need. And this consumption also is linked to personal identities and shows the social position. It worthy of note that novels has described that in the affirmative despite the different theme. that fact show that the system of fashion has established independently to the ideology.
These consumption is not a mere life of luxury but a strategic behavior because it is regarded as economically proper behavior. In fact, fashionable consumption is impossible but in capitalistic production mode. In other words, it is a most proper for capitalistic society. Therefore this fashionable consumption behavior was not forbidden in wars or confusion of fascism.
It is worth of popular novels that it reaches the truth by researching varied details.
