This paper treatise handles the poet, Shin Seok-jeong whom I have personal memories of. When I was in middle school days, he was maternal grandfather of my friend's and this was one of the major reasons that I have always thought I should write about him for years.
In this paper it is intended to show how his stream of consciousness has been changed and to find out the meaning in his poems. Also this is intended to understand the meanings of his lyricism consistent in his poetic world and the meanings of the objects frequently expressed in his poems.
The most frequently used objects by Shin are 'mother', 'mountain' and 'bamboo'. 'Mother' stands for the lost hometown for him and is extendedly expressed how much he longed for the lost hometown which links to the ideal land. Shin always dreams of the ideal land where his mother is, and mother is the hometown and ideal land to him.
'Mountain' makes Shin to realize the truth nature gives. As mentioned in the Greek myths, mountain is the place where gods and human-beings meet. Mountain in Shin's poems is not just the mountain to climb but the object of religious and philosophical study. Shin cherishes the great number of flowers, grass, trees and birds living in the mountain. Shin enjoys expressing the human-being's mentality which does not go against the nature.
'Bamboo' is the traditional symbol as the spirit of the classical scholar. Shin expresses the life of poor poets who are true to their principles especially by comparing the importance of the life to his poetic material, the bamboo.
Putting the above points together, Shin's poems present the lives going with the order of nature and also presents the world being in good harmony with the nature as an ideal land.
