Shin-pa has emerged as one of the major arts of the 20th century in Korea, exerting a great influence on other performing and narrative art styles. The research about Shin-pa has limitations because Shin-pa scripts are absent in Korea.
This study is to characterize Shin-pa narrative analyzing the novel <Tears(눈물)> written by Lee sanghyup(이상협) who was famous as a translater of Japanese Shin-pa and a leader of the Shin-pa troupe. The novel was published serially at the newspaper "Maeilsinbo(매일신보)" for almost six months from 1913 to 1914, and Shin-pa based on the novel was performed several times in 1910s. So, the narrative of Shin-pa can be extrapolated by the narrative of the novel in this study.
The characteristics of Shin-pa narrative are demonstrated as follows. First, the Shin-pa narrative deals with problems of modern new family such as "changeable love" and "difficulty in becoming mother" focusing on women. Shin-pa narrative is a sort of domestic tragedy. Second, the structure of Shin-pa narrative is a roller coaster ride of extremely sad situation followed by extremely delightful ending. On the one hand Shin-pa shows pains and sadness of protagonists in the pains, but on the other hand ends delightfully by removing the causes of the pains and by giving punishments or repentance to antagonists. Third, Shin-pa imposes patience, compassion, and loyalty as desirable morals through the structure. Forth, characters express their emotion simply, overly and directly. This makes Shin-pa an excessive emotional drama. Fifth, Shin-pa was friendly to western capitalized culture, ignoring colonized realities in Korea.
