Kim so-wol is beloved by people as much as he is called a national poet. And Many people think this popularity is derived from universality of his poetry. This universality sympathized by people has studied by many researchers as various ways. As a result of that, there were somewhat profit results.
This treatise approached the meaning of universality appeared in his poetry from the viewpoint of a rhetorical conception, topos. Topos (commonplace) is a conventionalized expression or passage in a text which comes to be used as a resource for the composition of subsequent texts. By F. R. Curtius, this term is extended to a meaning of established schemes of thought, extended metaphors. Topos in this treatise means what is noted above.
Looked negatively, topos often reduces literary works to the level of cliche. On the contrary, topos does not bind poem's materials, expressions and thinking ways used by poet to individual and heterogeneous level. Moreover, topos makes them to self-evident truth and universal truth. Simultaneously, it leads universality to greatness. Because topos may be obvious, but it may be also a universal truth, and as great as universal.
In Kim's works, unfamiliar and extraneous metaphors often appeared.
Those expressions can be appreciated highly as metaphor itself were discontinued and isolated from poetical line in the context. So it makes his works incompletely. So peculiarity loses universality and peculiarity itself is isolated, after all.
On the contrary, metaphors are hardly used in Kim's masterpieces. In addition, metaphors he used are much more close to commonplace. Material, the way of expression and thinking way in his poetry are mostly generalized and universalized. And when he orients his poetry toward universality, it is more successful. Kim so-wol's poem rediscovers various factors proved by many people and he sublimates them universality, saving from the danger of the cliche.
Though Kim so-wol's poem is mostly based on topos that can be generated danger of cliche, he is highly appreciated. It means that poet's originality is not always spring from discovering something new. Poet's originality is consist of an originality of substance and an originality of form. Kim so-wol was concerned with the latter, topas belongs to re-discovery. That is why he is one of great poets.
