Arirang is one of the most famous Korean folk songs still enjoyed by many Korean people today. It sings of joy and sorrow that illustrates the national characteristics and affections of the Korean people. The research on Arirang surprisingly till this day has followed two trends. The research on Arirang either overtly focused on beautifying the aesthetics of Arirang or was completely ignored. Therefore, this research made an attempt to theorize the folk songs of Korea and offer a more objective perspective in explaining the Arirang. Through a thorough investigation, the research has reached a conclusion that Arirang made its appearance during the kaehwagi period and not in the ancient or middle ages as it was generally believed. More important, the research had successfully proved the hypothesis that arirang is a word incorporating an actual meaning instead of a mere repetition. In order to maintain an objective analysis of the study, this research investigated various print materials from the kaehwaki period, and revealed the significance of repetition in Arirang through the generally consented folk song theory. As a result, it was concluded that the repetition of Arirang has its origin in the phrase arurio(one shall know or is it known), and the syntagmatic structure of this song is a grammatical inversion. With this meta-structure of Arirang, the research was able to hypothesize the reason why there are many different versions of Arirang in Korea. Furthermore, this structure can offer an effective evidence for understanding the significance of Arirang during the kaehwagi (enlightenment) period.
