The purpose of this paper is to identify the way the narrative tradition group accepted and interpreted Arirang throughout the folk tales. The Korean people have great interest and affection in Arirang. Ironically, however, it is not easy to find Arirang in the field of narrative.
In Arirong and Arirang, the narrator says that Arirang was originally Arirong, which means the deaf (‘A’) and the dumb(‘rong’) in Chinese letter. With it the narrator finds Arirang’s origin from a hard married life. In another folk tale, Arirang gogae urae, Arirang gogae(Arirang hill) means the constraints of social status which blocks love between a noble girl and a servant boy. In short, Arirang gogae(Arirang hill) is a hill that involves symbolic or metaphoric meaning, not a hill which we can see in daily life. Miryang-Arirang is seen as being originated from Arang legend, through which the narrative tradition group console Arang’s victimized soul and prevent any hazards from the ghost. Not only is Arirang an imprecation or a curse, but used to criticize the husband’s imprudence and emphasize the fidelity of the wife in Arirang gogae-sul.
Both of two folk tales explaining the origin of Jindo-Arirang was made by the women betrayed by their lovers. However, the purpose of the two tales are different from each other. One is warning for inappropriate relationship between a married man and his first lover. The other one is accepted as lamentation or grumbling of the woman’s hard life. Arirang is the expression of the will to overcome any adversity in Dongbak and Arari, which is related to the origin of Jeongseon-Arirang. Arirang has the meaning of loyalty for only one king in the folk tales of Restoration of Goryeo, In conclusion, the narrative tradition groups give various meanings to Arirang using historical facts and their own experiences.
Currently what we should repose in mind is: how we can lay the foundation for active handing-down of Arirang-related narrative tales.
