In September 1598, when the Japanese invasion drew to its end and a cease fire negotiation began, Ding Yingtai(丁應泰), zanhuazhushi(贊畵主事) of Ming China, brought a charge against Choson to the emperor on the basis of the content" of Haedong chegukki(Records of Countries to the East 海東諸國記) which had been written 130 years before. Ding insisted that Choson hide its relations with Japan and consequently defy the emperor's dignity. This happening brought the unprecedented tension between Choson and Ming China.
Dings charge could be fatal to Choson because Choson had been under the Ming tribute system and that Ming sent heavy reinforcements at the request of the king of Choson(Sunjo 宣祖). Besides, the old suspicion of the Ming court that Choson might conspire with Japan against Ming would get more convincing proof if Dings insistence based on Haedong chegukki proves to be true.
Choson's reaction was a bold one, By suspending management of political affairs, Sunjo strongly denied the charge of treason and expressed his objection to peace negotiations, Moreover, he sent jinjusa(陳奏使) for persuading the Ming court that Choson had never lied but only performed a good neighbor(交隣) policy, I believe that the hidden purpose of those reactions consisted in grasping the detached Ming generals' view of cease fire and in demonstrating Choson's position of anti-negotiation with Japan dearly. After a long debate, the Ming court concluded that Dings insistence lacked in its evidence and Choson cleared herself of the charge.
After these happenings, the Ming court took its stand of a nonintervention policy as far as Choson-Japan relations remained unharmful. Though Choson still had to be conscious of Ming China on relations with Japan, Choson tried to use the policy for taking the diplomatic initiative between Ming China and Japan, The Choson court not only tried to remind Ning of Japan as a possible threat in order to prevent another invasion with the help of Ming but also Japan of Choson's relations with Ming in order to cake the initiative in negotiating with Japan. I believe, as a result, Choson could develop the independent relations with Japan from Ming China in following diplomatic activities such as Tongshjnsa(通信使).
