KimYoungChulJeon(金英哲傳) is a novel written in Chinese language created in the late 17th Century. This novel has been known to be a work of Hong Se-Tae because it is found in『Yuhajib(柳下集)』of Hong Se-Tae(洪世泰: 1653~1725). However, another version of the original series that predates the one collected in『Yuhajib』was discovered. Such reveals the fact that KimYoungChulJeon gathered in『Yuhajib』is not the work of Hong Se-Tae but an abridged version of an preceded unidentified work. This thesis explores the literary qualities on this original series of KimYoungChulJeon. KimYoungChulJeon portrays the tragedy of the war that took place in 17th Century in East Asia. The hero, Kim Young-Chul, a commoner of Chosun(朝鮮), participates as a member of the Chosun-Myung(朝明) allied troop in the war against Chung(淸), a Chinese dynasty, and becomes a hostage of Chungs military. Though he manages living in China for 12 years as a hostage with two wives and four children, he escapes to Chosun leaving his family there. Later on in Chosun he remarries with children but many times again he is called on to the ongoing war against China. Even after the war is over, he still strives to survive in poverty with all the taxes he needs to pay up. In his late years, he is demeaned to lead a roving life, grieving for the wives and children he left in China, until he faces his death. Putting it in a simpler term, KimYoungChulJeon is a novel that depicts a commoners and his familys tragic life stories. But the novel, transcending an individuals unique life, embodies the general joys and sorrows of the populace of the time that encountered the East Asian war. It is a masterpiece of Chinese-language Korean novels that portrays the tragedy of the war in an immense scale. In addition, it stands on top of the realist novels in terms that it comprehensively represents the adverse situations that the people of the lower classes were faced. Furthermore, through the novel, the author intended to fiercely criticize the reality of Chosun that brought such a tragedy at the time. The novel mercilessly tells that the hero Kim Young-Chul escaped to his country at the risk of his life only to be faced with the land of despair where he had to struggle with severe taxes and the continuing conscription to the war.
