At the end of middle age, Bourgeoisie who engaged in commerce and manufacturing industry and gentry who managed their agricultural land by a new method that is said to be capitalism were gaining in strength economically.
As a concequence, they could compete with nobles politically.
Parliament was the stage of political competition between' nobles and commons.
In Tudor times, Parliament was subjected to the government of the king, and the king was the leader of nobles.
In Stuart Dinasty, parliament, especially the House of commons, took the direction of independence from the king.
Concequently, the House of commons which was composed of the repres entatives of the rich commons collided with the king and could be independent of the king.
Then, the king asserted the theory of divine rights of the king and tried to rationalize the absolute rights of the king.
In opposition to the king. parliament which was a political organ of rich commons, asserted their traditional rights based on the common laws.
Finally, a civil war broke out between the king and commons. It was called Puritan Revolution.
The war broke out for the cause of liberal rights of the people, but as a matter of fact, it was a political struggle between absolutism and liberalism.
During the armed confliction, the members of the House of commons who were the representatives of rich commons asserted the theory of social contract based on natural laws insisted of common laws.
The civil war resulted in the victory of Independent Party.
As the party interrupted the revolution on the way, so the revolutioil resulted in imperfection and compromisiny with old institution.
In other wards, it was true that the civil war was a revolution which was caused by Bourgeoisie, so it was Bourgeoisie Revolution, but as a Bourgeoisie revolution, it was too premature to be called the Bourgeoisie revolaition.
The sovereignty moved from the king to the parliament, and so we ('an say that Puritan Revolution played an important role in democratizing politics in England.
when the second civil war, what we call Grolious Revolution broke
out, the politics in England was almost democratized.
Democratization of politics was on the stage, what is called parliament. so the object of this thesis was to inquire into the achievements of the British parliament, especially concerned with Long Parliament.
