The lacquer work, which has been developed in the race living on the rice such as Korea, China, Japan, Vietnam, Myanmar and India, is related to each country and times. Also it has been updated as the distinctive art work properly for geographical, natural and cultural condition.
Showing distinctive symbolization and decoration as well as balancing with the level of life and development of spiritual culture at each times, the mother of pearl work symbolizing Korean lacquer work is placed to the principal craft in terms of racial independence.
At the view of periodical feature, it was the pure mother of pearl work that was the main part before three countries was reigning but in the middle of the period of three countries it was the technique of colored picture using colors.
The plane techniques at the period of unified Shin-Ra and the mother of pearl works at Koryo times were so developed that the mother of pearl work had the support of public at times controlled by Cho-Sun.
On the basis of storiesmentioned above, eventually the mother of pearl work has had the great reputation which is well fit to geographical and natural condition in Korea.
The term of lamina is being used as the major term among many words in the mother of the pearl work in addition to be recognized as the main material used for making the pieces of works.
There are many significant differences in lamina when considering the various kinds of works, uses, effectiveness and shapes being used for other objectives.
Actually almost of natural materials for the mother of pearl work is depending on the exported ones.
But most countries have troubles in serving the demand and supply of natural materials due to the environment problems widely in the world.
With the study of historical backgrounds about how to use shell through the history of Juleumjil, the production of shell, the kinds of shell for Juleumjil, and the feature etc, I would like to help craftsmen inherit the mother of pearl work as possible as I can along with the students studying the craft.
