This paper seeks to expose the cultural habits of modern Koreans. Education is one of the hot-debated issues in Korea. Parents in the Kang-nam area of Seoul, which is seen as the epicenter of educational fervor in Korean society were interviewed as were those in the area of Kang-buk, in smaller provincial cities, and in an alternative school.
The results are as follows: First, there are many problems of education resulting from private tutoring which centers on developing only academic ability - this is one of the most popular extracurricular activities in Korea. All parents desire to bring up their children to be reputable persons in the community. Regardless of public interests, education has been devalued to a mere tool which is used for personal achievements. This reality has led parents to be concerned only about preparing their children for college-entrance examinations.
Secondly, instead of considering the aptitude and ability of their children in deciding the important matters for educating them, parents jump on the bandwagon, following the footstep of the majority. Even in preparing for college-entrance, parents know that the overall effectiveness of preceding study is minute. Nevertheless, they concede due to their pre-sentimental fear that their children might fall behind.
Thirdly, there is a strong tendency to seek first the family's interests in educating their children. Gifts are often given to teachers in order to benefit their own children. This is a shallow expression of family-orientatedness in the education of children. Even participation in the Parent Association or meetings with teachers is motivated by the parents' own selfishness, rather than their sincere care for the studies and future educational course of their children.
Education is never a private matter. The publicity of education and its importance in society ought to be renewed. The common sentiment, which sees education as a mere commodity dictated by the market economy, must be wiped out. The purpose of education is to bring up children to become sensible and discerning citizens who can contribute to the development of democracy.
