This study is to research the culture of costume in the relationship between Korea and Japan in Chosun Dynasty, based on the fact that there were frequent political and cultural exchanges between Korean Envoys of Chosun Dynasty and Japanese envoys.
This study first takes a look at the political situation in Korean and Japan during Chosun Dynasty era, which made the exchanges between Korean envoys and Japanese envoys possible. This studY also examines Banjeon, Byeol-banjeon, and BokjeonglJum, which Korean envoys received from Japan, and Yedan and ByeollJOk, which Korean envoys gave to Japan.
The traveling expense, which wase provided to Korean envoys, is called Noja. There were Banjeon and
Byeolbanjeon in Noja. BokjeongIJum is also provided to Korean envoys with the support from each provinces.
Hojo(the Ministry of Finance and Economy) provided Banjeon to each envoys, including .Jeong sa, Busa, and .bngsagwan and other officials. Various Po(cloth)s were provided as Banjeon, such as Po for making official robes. under garments, outer garments, belts, Hansamju, and Cheunik.
BokjeongIJum from provinces included costumes, food, drugs, vessels, and other goods. For costumes as
BokjeonglJum, BaekjeolJO, HOIJi(tiger fur), PyolJi(leopard fur), NoklJi(deer fur), fOIJi(fish skin), and so on are provided. These were provided mostly from Kyeongsang-province and Cholla-province and partly from Chungcheong-province.
Yedan, a gift Korean envoys gave to the Japanese king and his servants. is consisted of Gong-yedan(official gift) and Sa-yedan(private gift). Costumes among various items in Gong-yedan included Daesuja, BaekjeolJO, Saeng}eo{JO, Baekmyeonju, Heukma{JO, BaeklJOlmyeon, HOIJi, PyolJi, CheongseoIJi, and fOIJi. Sa-yedan, provided to the Japanese king and his servants, included HOIJi, BaekjeolJO. and HeukmalJO.
Some aspects of costume culture during Chosun Dynasty can be examined through the Noja. BokjeonglJum, Gong-yedan, and Gong-yedan of Korean envoys, since specialities and local products of provinces were used for these items.
