This essay is to trace out the emerging process for the literary critics named 4.19 generation. First of all, I focus on at once the question concerning with what critical material the critics have carried out their critical work by defining critical activity as a practice and the way they have formed their own interpretative community by internally organizing their own discourses. Both socially and culturally fertile soil has enormously influenced the process the literary critics have made their own discourses. The soil includes such the surrounding as the restructuring and expansion of universities, the development of human sciences, the launching of various periodicals, and the enlargement of intellectual discourses. The critical group, who have been equipped with various and profound
intellectual experience under such fertile environment, has created some new critical discourses by de-constructing the established critical system through the struggle against the older critics. While Moonji group centered on Kim Hyun has cherished the autonomy of literature based on individualism and liberalism, Changbi group led by Back Nak-chung has established a enlightened and progressive view for literary criticism by accepting the enlightened tradition the Western civic society have inherited. Furthermore, Sangwhang group led by Lim Hun-young and Koo Joong-seo has cherished a radical view founded on the social function of literature.
