This paper presents the current status of pollution from automotives and future trends, the current's exhaust emission standard and the trend, as well as the airpollution reduction measures
The number of vehicles is going to be about ten million until July, 1997, and is expected to be approximately 1.4 times in 2005 compared with 1995. Although the number of vehicles per 1,000 peoples in Korea amounts reaches to just 1/2.5~1/3.7 of that of advanced countries, the effect of vehicles on air pollution is very high. The survey of present contributions of emission for each kind of vehicles shows that CO and HCs come mainly from gasoline vehicles, and NOX and PM from heavy-duty diesel vehicles.
In order to reduce the exhaust emissions from vehicles, the emission standard will be tightened year by year. The national standard will meet the level of advanced countries by the year. In addition, the measurement of NOX will be taken to identify the characteristics of emission patterns for in-use vehicles.
The measures for the abatement of air pollution are to develop the techniques of reducing the CO and HCs for passenger vehicles, and NOx and PM for heavy-duty diesel vehicles. Development of electric vehicles, and vehicles using CNG and hydrogen fuel will be accerlerated and supported by government. Moreover, the economic incentives will be given to the low-pollution vehicles, which is known widely and distributed to the public.
The program to advance the quality of fuel should be propelled together with the vehicle-manufacturing companies and the oil-refining companies.
