This study finds out the poetic meaning and theme of Changiparangga, a mastery poem of the Silla period, and the structural characteristics related with the embodiment of its theme. The findings of this study are as follows:
The main theme of Changiparangga is the praise of Giparang’s personality and the expectation of his tenacity in the face of adversity. The secondary theme is the poetic speaker’s will or hope to follow the spirit of Giparang’s love of the people.
In terms of poetic meaning, Changiparangga is composed of three strophes: the first strophe from line 1 to 5 paves the way for the condition or moment for the poetic meaning and sentiment, on the base of which the middle strophe from line 6 to 8 suggests the secondary theme by converting the meaning and sentiment of the first strophe, while the last strophe from line 9 to 11 inherits and makes clear the poetic meaning and sentiment of the preceding strophe by adopting a new material and setting and unifies the whole work by suggesting the main theme.
The structure of time and space of the work is set for bringing the expectation of Giparang’s eternity in the main theme to a proper realization.
