In Kim Nam-Cheon's novel Daeha(大河), Park Hyeong-Georl, the hero who performs the mission of growth, is one of the best examples that are tom between the ideal of self-determination and the need for social integration. The first trial he faces during growth is a setback of marriage. When he was frustrated in his marriage, he feels that 'the surge of res sentiment that he has no idea on whom he should work off', and then gets his head shaved. The fact his marriage strikes a snag and he finally turns down the proposal of marriage signifies that he decides to refuse attaining maturity, which should be done to be socially acknowledged by the community. Having his head shaved is a sign that most clearly reveals his refusal against the community and tradition.
When there occurs an obstacle to his marriage and he vaguely feels his growth in the community falls through, he turns his eyes on sexuality. He comes to know Buyong, a gisaeng, and this serves as a crucial opportunity for the growth of his self. From his relationship with Buyong, we can see he turns into a lover who cares about what others feel about and need for love. His love has him look back on his own self, and he wants to change himself to make development By pursuing sexuality, Hyeong-Georl learns which life his self should lead and in which way he should behave. We can take the hint here that his self would move toward 'practical growth worthy of praise'.
Another thing we should note is that Teacher Moon's role, the supporter of the young adults including Hyeong-Georl, is mostly based on the Christianity. For Hyeong-Georl, the Christianity is an equivalent to civilization. We need to listen to Karatani Kojin who said, "the Christianity has attracted gloomy hearts full of res sentiment, from which the modernistic subject has been created". The Christianity leads Hyeong-Georl to recognize himself as an independent subject. He discovers a form of confession in Christianity. As a man whose heart is overwhelmed with ressentiment, he tries to save his own self through the journey into realm of lnnerlichkeit, and to have the dynamics work, through the form of confession, to transform himself into a subject. In the modem history of the Korean literature, Hyeong-Georl is rated as the hero of Bildungsroman who is forced to leave away, because he makes a hostile challenge to the community where to integration is emphasized, staying in the realm of Innerlichkeit that is hostile to the public one.
