From early '90s, 'cultural studies', a kind of new methodology and theory, are introduced in the academic field of Korean literature studies. This approach is clearly different from Korean literature studies in '80s, and can be classified as follows: 1) studies on modern literature itself. This trend problematized present understanding of definition of literature and its recognition. From this point of view, recognition of Korean literature including its origin, territory and research objects can be differently constituted(researchers like Hwang Jong-yeon, Kim Dong-shik and Lee Hyun-shik). 2) micro studies on fashion, custom and everyday life. Micro-historical approach is focused on small and everyday life including fashion, book advertisement, department store and custom. Those research objects and areas were excluded and underestimated by main stream Korean literature studies. That is to say, a method 'new and different reading through small things' criticized 'text fetishism(text-centralism), and opened new heureumetic horizon(researchers like Lee Kyung-hoon, Kang Myung-kwan and Kim Joo-ree). But, it is not completely separated from main stream research style and its results. Previous research theme was reinvited and confirmed again by new angle of cultural studies. 3) popular literature studies. Korean literature studies have been focused narrowly on writers and 'literature(aesthetic art)'. But, cultural studies paid attention on 'popular fiction' and minor genres including detective novels(researchers like Ran Myung-hwan, Lee Jung-ok and Cho Sung-myeon).
As a conclusion, cultural studies approach, based on interdisciplinary approach, is contributed to reflective understanding of Korean modernity and modern literature. But, until now, it is not freed from main literary paradigm completely. For it should be determined most of Korean literature studies to product new approach and praxis style by translation and application of western theories.
