This study is to analyze the trends of the formal expression of contextual attitudes about the local theme museums in Japan. Architectural design by the contextual codes has been considered as an appropriate way to build up the regional identity in these days. After a theoretical study on 'Context', a statistical analysis was processed about the correlations between the types of the locations and the types of forms related with the elevation. At the last stage of the study, the specific methods for expression were studied. The contextual attitudes of continuity characterized into two concepts like continuity and resemblance. As the result of the research, the contextual forms appeared strong with such location types as beaches or plains comparing to mountains or downtown. On the other hand, the conditions of mountains or downtown tend to make the form complicated and divided for adjustment to the context of surroundings. The various expression methods like unifying with the land, applying the configuration of the ground to the shape of the building, using the clear or reflective materials and dividing the mass were researched as helping continuity and resemblance between building and landscape.
