In this article, the academical accomplishments made by current studies regarding the land survey projects conducted by the Japanese imperial authorities inside colonized lands are examined. The primary objective of this article is to seek for a new direction for our next step in this subject area.
Imperial Japan conducted such survey projects first domestically, and later in their colonies such as Okinawa(1899-1903), Taiwan(1898-1904), Korea(then Chosun/1910-1918), the Kwantung leased territory(Kantoshu)(l914-1924) and Manchuria(l932-) .
Until the 1980s, the violent and plundering nature of the survey project was mainly evaluated, but after that the modern aspects of such project began to be re-evaluated. Yet most of the researches have been dealing with a particular country or region, and efforts of comparing several cases with each other are fairly lacking for now, It is imperative that in future studies researches would compare the survey project conducted inside Japanese territory with other projects conducted in other colonized lands. And furthermore, considering that land survey projects usually mirrored the imperial intentions and colonization plans of the conductors, projects of such nature that had been previously conducted by the Western imperial states should be examined as weIl. Only by doing this we will be able to see the entire picture of Impelialism which spreaded throughout the globe, and properly evaluate the general nature of land survey projects.
