This paper is to examine Ruskin's explanation on the mass
as an observer and analyst of architecture. No critic of
architecture has ever paid more attention to the mass,
facade and ornament than Ruskin. In this paper, we confine
the range of the study to the mass only which Ruskin
analyzed as a visual experience. Analysis of the result
revealed as follows;
1. Ruskin explains the mass as a sculpture, means to
express the rhythmical sense, sublime, object by which
we experience the building, and object forming the space.
2. He thinks that the most important thing in recognizing
the mass visually is the bounded line and the mass should
be observed at a glance.
3. In the representation of the mass, he requires to
preserve the balanced proportion. 4. We can see that he
is explaining the spatial representation formed by the
mass with an entirely visual viewpoint.
