It is not wholesome to conceive that architecture directs human beings as users. That would be a closed view. It would be much better to approach an architectural space with an open mind for more general and comprehensive perception. If there is a way to establish nature’s order and let humans intervene without altering the order, it would be traditional Koreanstyle housing: simple beauty crafted from a Korean-specific art perspective that values ‘being natural.’ The Japanese, who sought excessive decorativeness, envied Koreans for that simplicity. In order to discuss the harmony between nature and humans, did Koreans live the way they did, praising and venerating nature in awe? Ganchongchae is the true realization of that sense. In modern architecture, we seek the more popular and artistic side of architecture. Amongst the multi-various changes in function, structure, and shape, it is fortunate that we have not lost the ethical values of architecture that targets the multitudes of the times. Making efforts such as conquering the structural impossibility, seeking values that appeal to the public, sustainable, environmentally friendly architecture, and what not, humans will keep making choices and progress for the best; however, how do we overcome the disjunction with nature when we keep building higher and higher in the city to get more light? Can we wipe away all the dark clouds by creating roof staircases and green spaces between the towers? Having lost the vapor from the earth, access to light, or one breath of wind, the pale citizens cannot relax and drink a glass of water. We, the citizens of earth, should not forget the seven lamps of architecture: sacrifice, truth, power, beauty, life, memory, and submission. “A lifefull space should be like this,” Ruskin said in the 19th century. “Architecture, as a historic record of a community, should be a space to combine ethics and art, promote humanity and communal cooperation.” The environmental changes of ecological architecture depend on individual decisions of the people who live now. Moving to the country is desirable, though with electronic help. For a future utopia, we have no choice but to believe in our conscience and free will.
