This article examines the Joseon-Qing relations from the Manchu Invasion in 1636 to the Qing’s Entrance into the Shanhai Pass in 1644, mainly on the issue of military aid (助兵). After the Manchu Invasion in 1636, Joseon severed its relation to the Ming and complied with the Qing. However, since the Ming still ruled China proper until 1644, the possibility remained for Joseon to maintain or even restore its relation with the Ming. To prevent any contact between Joseon and the Ming, the Qing demanded military assistance from Joseon. This aimed to secure a psychological advantage in the war with the Ming, while also observing Joseon’s response. Although the Joseon government continued diplomatic negotiations to delay or forgo the military aid, these attempts only intensified Qing suspicion and pressure toward Joseon. In 1640, the Qing escalated their demands by tracking down and transferring Joseon officials who had led anti-Qing sentiments, while also summoning the Joseon king to appear at the Qing court. Faced with the pressure, the Joseon government decided to participate actively in the Qing campaign against the Ming. The issue of military aid was finally resolved in 1644, with the fall of the Ming and the Qing’s entrance into China proper. The progression of the military aid issue shows the role that the existence of the Ming dynasty played in stabilizing relations between the Joseon and Qing dynasties.
