Stress is a significant issue among young adults, often arising from academic pressures. Despite its prevalence, many young adults lack access to traditional therapeutic resources due to cost, stigma, and accessibility barriers. Digital mental health interventions (DMHIs) using large language models offer promising solutions, but an arbitrarily designed guidance approach could negatively impact therapeutic outcomes. This study investigated two virtual agents (VAs) with different guidance approaches: Socratic, offering open-ended questions, and Didactic, providing direct advice. Twenty participants interacted with either Socratic or Didactic VA. Their stress reduction, engagement, and therapeutic alliance were analyzed. The results showed no significant differences between the Socratic and Didactic VA in stress reduction, engagement, and therapeutic alliance. However, stress reduction correlated with the emotional dimension in engagement (p=0.04) and all dimensions of therapeutic alliance (p<0.01). These findings offer insights for designing VAs in future DMHIs emphasizing stress reduction, emotional engagement, and therapeutic alliance.
