This paper is a case study aimed at evaluating the potential application of generative AI, specifically ChatGPT, in Old Testament studies. It critically analyzes and examines the major interpretative views of Job 42 : 6 and the novel interpretation of the speaker as God proposed by Pieter van der Lugt and Troy W. Martin. In the process of studying the primary interpretations of Job 42 : 6 and the new interpretation, this study explores the use of ChatGPT as a tool for academic research. The exploration focuses on its ability to collect information on the Hebrew text, to analyze prior studies on the passage, to generate new interpretations based on learned data, to analyze newly introduced scholarly materials, and to produce comprehensive opinions incorporating the additional data. The study concludes with the following findings.
First, ChatGPT generated the Hebrew text of the book of Job and demonstrated its potential utility in the initial stages of research by providing information on the lexical meanings, symbolic interpretations, key interpretive issues of Hebrew words used in the text, and their appropriate meanings within the context of the passage. Second, it provided significant information on previous studies of Job 42 : 6. Since the interpretation of Job 42 : 6 has been extensively studied by many scholars over a long period, ChatGPT was well-versed in the interpretation and key issues related to this verse. Third, it appears to lack the ability to generate new interpretive possibilities not included in its learned data, such as understanding Job 42 : 6 as a divine statement. Fourth, when provided with new scholarly materials, ChatGPT was capable of analyzing and critiquing the new data, which can be helpful to scholars who need to study a large volume of material within a limited time. Fifth, when uploading necessary materials to ChatGPT, it can incorporate new information into its ongoing discussions, thereby demonstrating a capacity for adaptive learning. In summary, despite the drawback of potentially providing incorrect information due to hallucination, ChatGPT can be a valuable tool in Old Testament studies when utilized instrumentally in the research process.
