ChatGPT, developed as a language model, has attracted increasing interest in educational applications, especially in the field of foreign languages. This study explores how ChatGPT can be used to create Chinese language teaching materials. Since different levels and types of materials can be created for the same learning content in a short time, personalized learning materials can be implemented. Furthermore, if instructors can reduce the time spent on preparing and creating materials, they can spend more time investing in capacity building and researching different teaching methods. Considering the ethical issues and risks of using artificial intelligence such as ChatGPT, including the potential for lowering learners’ critical thinking skills, this study presents specific examples of instructor-created learning materials and explores how ChatGPT can be effectively used in Chinese language teaching in the future. While this research only covers the steps for instructors to create various teaching materials based on ChatGPT, it is necessary to verify their educational effectiveness after using them in actual classes. Although we have focused on the production of text materials, generative AI tools can easily produce videos with voice dubbing, so it is necessary to continue research on the production and use of educational videos.
