This paper examines the literary trajectory of Kim Mun-jip, a controversial figure in Korean literary criticism during the mid-to-late 1930s. Despite his active engagement in the field, Kim became a problematic figure due to his pro-Japanese stance and eccentric behavior. His literary development can be divided into three phases: (1) experimental modernist fiction, (2) criticism centered on the question of literary language, and (3) engagement with the discourse on Naeseon Ilche (Japan-Korea Unity, 内鮮一体).
Kim’s early literary endeavors were shaped by Japanese modernism, particularly the Shinkankakuha(新感覚派). His early work, the novel written in Japanese Rimoshi(理毛師), set in a futuristic Tokyo, reflected a dual consciousness toward modernity through the figure of the 'modern girl,' observed from a marginalized perspective. Subsequently, he sought to establish a unique literary identity by exploring the regionality of a declining Korea but failed to gain literary recognition.
After returning to Korea in 1935, he turned to literary criticism, advocating the notion that “literature is the art of language.” He argued that Korean literature suffered from a lack of tradition and artistic quality. Although his critiques often lacked logical coherence, they ignited debates on the essence of literature, particularly in a critical landscape searching for new directions after the decline of proletarian literature. He notably praised Kim Yu-jeong’s literary language and called for a renewal of Korean literature. However, his limited understanding of Korean literary traditions and linguistic biases hindered his critical depth.
Following the outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese War, Kim aligned himself with the colonial policy of Naeseon Ilche, envisioning complete equality and indistinguishability between Koreans and Japanese. He argued that the beauty and uniqueness of Korean-language literature could enrich Japanese culture. Furthermore, he sought to reconcile his identity as an artist wandering between Japan and Korea through the aesthetic framework of Naeseon Ilche, but ultimately faced downfall amid criticism from Korean writers and his own self-destructive actions.
Kim Mun-jip’s literary trajectory provides a valuable case for reconsidering the significance of modernism and aestheticism in the non-Western East Asian context. It also sheds light on the diverse spectrum of discourses and practices surrounding Naeseon Ilche in colonial Korea.
