PURPOSE : To explore the association of physical activity (PA) and sedentary behavior (SB) time with body mass index (BMI), vital capacity and exercise quality in senior students in Changchun, China.
METHODS : A whole group random sampling method was used to select 586 students in Changchun for the questionnaire and physical fitness test. PA and SB time of senior students measured using the CLASS-C questionnaire. BMI, vital capacity and various exercise qualities are tested in accordance with the National Student Fitness Standards. SPSS 25.0 software and Stata 12.0 software were used for statistical analysis.
RESULTS : The boys’ PA time, BMI, vital capacity, 50m run and standing long jump test scores were higher than the girls (P<0.05); however, the sit-and-reach test scores were significantly lower than the girls (P<0.01) and there was no gender difference in SB time (P>0.05). Senior one students had higher PA time and screen SB time (p<0.05); however, seniors three students had higher BMI, vital capacity and exercise quality (p<0.05). VPA time was significantly and positively correlated with performance on the 50m run (r=0.083, P<0.05); VPA (r=-0.136), MVPA (r=-0.115) and TPA (r=-0.082) times were significantly and negatively correlated with performance on the sit-and-reach test respectively (P<0.05); and MPA time was significantly and positively correlated with performance on the standing long jump test (r=0.100, P<0.05). On-screen SB time had a significant positive correlation with BMI (r=0.087, p<0.05) and a significant negative correlation with vital capacity (r=-0.085, p<0.05). In addition, senior students who met the criteria of “<2h on-screen SB” had higher vital capacity (P<0.05); those who met both the criteria of “≥60min MVPA” and “<2h on-screen SB” had higher vital capacity (P<0.05).
CONCLUSIONS : For Changchun senior students, MPA time was positively associated with explosive legs; on-screen SB time was positively associated with BMI and vital capacity; but above moderate intensity PA time was negatively associated with speed and flexibility qualities. It is recommended that active participation in PA be promoted and that on-screen SB time be limited in order to promote physical fitness among students.
