This study aims to identify and analyze the reasons why Korean learners of English often use tense sounds as substitutes for English. The use of tense sounds as substitutes for /θ/ represents a unique pattern distinct from language universal substitute sounds [t] and [s]. I propose that the high frequency of tense sounds as substitutes for /θ/ among Korean learners arises from their tendency to avoid dental sounds, which do not exist in the Korean phonemic inventory. It is expected that a phoneme and its substitutes must share some perceptual features and that there are decisive factors influencing their perceptual similarity. In addition to the preference for tense sounds as substitutes for /θ/, another notable characteristic is the use of different tense sounds in the syllable initial and syllable final. This is due to varying scales of Feature Preservation depending on syllable position. Therefore, I will analyze and explain this tensification of /θ/ using tableaux, demonstrating that it results from the combined effects of markedness constraints and Feature Preservation constraints that cause tense sounds.
