This study examines the ecological imagination and spatial representation in the animal poems of Michael Longley and Elizabeth Bishop, focusing on how their distinct approaches to nature and civilization intersect through animal imagery. While both poets demonstrate acute sensitivity to ecological issues, their methods of engaging with nature and expressing environmental concerns differ significantly in terms of spatial recognition and poetic strategy. Longley’s poetry, centered around Carrigskeewaun in western Ireland, expands from local specificity to universal significance, particularly evident in poems like “The Leveret,” “Wooden Hare,” and “Two Skunks.” His work transforms concrete geographical locations into spaces of artistic transcendence, attempting to heal historical trauma through ecological imagery. In contrast, Bishop’s poetry, grounded in experiences from Nova Scotia to Brazil, delves into the psychological depths of marginalized beings, as demonstrated in “The Moose,” “Pink Dog,” and “Giant Snail,” critically examining the contradictions of modern civilization through ecological vulnerability. The study reveals how both poets engage with similar spaces - particularly Brazil - but with markedly different approaches. Longley’s treatment of Brazilian spaces in “Wooden Hare” and “Irish Hare” seeks to achieve artistic universality by integrating family relationships with cultural heritage, while Bishop’s “Pink Dog” uses animal imagery to expose social inequalities and critique carnival culture’s superficiality. This distinction exemplifies their divergent poetic strategies: Longley’s meditative approach aims for artistic transcendence, while Bishop’s direct observation emphasizes existential isolation. Through comparative analysis, this research demonstrates how ecological imagination in contemporary poetry can extend beyond mere nature observation or environmental consciousness to address broader literary challenges, including healing historical trauma and critiquing civilization. The study concludes that while Longley’s expansive spatial recognition and pursuit of artistic transcendence offer possibilities for cultural integration in ecological crisis, Bishop’s internal contemplation and ontological reflection provide critical perspectives on modern civilization through the voices of marginalized beings.
