This study investigates the learning motivation and demotivation patterns of Vietnamese learners of Korean for academic purposes. A survey of 105 Vietnamese international students at B University in Busan revealed that learning motivations include ‘interest and expectations for learning, necessary L2 self, ideal L2 self, and instrumental motivation.' However, demotivation involves ‘learning environment and teachers, learning burden and anxiety, external environment, and mismatch between effort and performance.' ‘Interest and expectations' was the strongest motivator, and 'learning burden and anxiety' was the highest demotivator. Men showed higher ‘ideal L2 self' and ‘instrumental motivation' than women. Higher GPA learners (4.0-4.5) had more ‘interest and expectations,' and intermediate and advanced learners showed higher ‘ideal L2 self.' This study provides foundational data on motivation and demotivation factors among Vietnamese academic learners, highlighting the need for further qualitative research.
