This paper explores how Komsomol’sk-na-Amure formed its identity as the city of youth in a process directed from the bottom by the Pervostroiteli-Komsomol’tsy’. Their attempts to publish memoirs about their activities in the early history of the city decisively shaped the city’s identity. Their effort was in full swing after the Great Patriotic War and was influenced by the social atmosphere of the postwar Soviet period, which praised heroes and cities for playing a pivotal role in the nation’s victory. Komsomol’sk-na- Amure did not directly experience the war, however, even though it produced war materials, and accordingly rarely attracted the attention of Soviet society. The city needed to be a hero in a different sense and found its own myth in the city’s construction during the 1930s. The Pervostroiteli-Komsomol’tsy’, by emphasizing their lives and activities in the 1930s in their writing, solidified the identity of Komsomol’sk-na-Amure as a city of youth. The city’s space was also filled with monuments which honored their performance in the city’s construction of the 1930s. As city residents and visitors traversed these places during the city’s birthday celebration, they continued to remember the Pervostroiteli-Komsomol’tsy’ dedicated and heroic works. The city’s identity formation accelerated with the restarted construction of the BAM, which drew the new generation of the 1970s Komsomol’tsy to participate in a heroic construction in the Far East. As the Pervostroiteli-Komsomol’tsy lectured youth about their past, they hoped that the new generation would inherit and imitate their performance and lives. In the process, the Pervostroiteli- Komsomol’tsy completely disregarded prisoners’ forced contribution to city’s construction to promote their voluntary role and thus claimed the glory of heroic status for themselves.
