Harold Pinter's The Lover appears to be a story of a couple who want to overcome the ennui in married life through their false adultery in the afternoon. However, when approaching the play from a psychoanalytic perspective, we can see the issues of repression and neurosis faced by the couple, and their afternoon adultery turns out to be a ‘play’ that helps them fulfill their sexual desires. Experiencing repression, the couple tries to maintain dignity in their married life by separating their sexual life from it. Since civilized society restricts sexual expression, they hide behind the blinds and change their identities(name, clothes, roles) during their ‘play’. At the end of the play, the couple, living separate lives as a social ego (as husband and wife) and instinctual ego (as lovers), seems to choose the latter. However, this study will argue for the integration of the instinctual ego and the social ego. Since Freudian theory asserts that civilization requires the renunciation of instinct, we will focus on acknowledging one's instincts by freeing oneself from repression and striving to become an integrated being.
