This essay explores the interplay between poetry and science, focusing on the materiality of objects by comparing the works of William Wordsworth and Eastern literary figures such as Li Bai and Wonhyo. In doing so, this study underscores unique Wordsworthian distinctions. The analysis begins by discussing the lyrical turn in Romantic literature, where the mind acknowledges its separation from matter and embarks on its own path of spiritual exploration. Using Wordsworth's “Simplon Pass” episode from The Prelude as a case study, the paper illustrates his transition from youthful naivety to mature subjectivity, rooted in an awareness of material reality. The paper contrasts this episode with Li Bai's “Drinking Alone Under the Moon” tetralogy and Wonhyo's “Tomb Anecdote,” highlighting the cultural differences in their engagement with materiality and imagination. Through this analysis, this essay demonstrates three important points. First, through the lyrical turn, objects' materiality is internalized in Romantic poetry; second, that Wordsworth's uniquely employs imagination to transform nature's materiality not directly into symbolic meaning but rather into a phase of potentiality for symbolism, thereby bridging the gap between the particular knowledge of science and the universal human experience. Finally, the analysis reveals that imagination needs to be reevaluated by literary critics for a renewed collaboration between science and poetry.
