Purpose: This study aimed to empirically investigate the relationship between the pedagogical content knowledge of leisure sports instructors, participants’ sport commitment, and continued participation intention.
Method: To achieve the research purpose, data were collected from 223 participants registered at comprehensive sports centers in Seoul and Gyeonggi provinces. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS version 21.0 and AMOS version 21.0, in accordance with the research objectives. The analysis included descriptive statistics, confirmatory factor analysis, and reliability. Additionally, correlation analysis and structural equation modeling (SEM) were performed to examine the relationships between the study variables.
Results: First, pedagogical content knowledge significantly influenced participants’ commitment to sports. Second, sports commitment had a significant impact on participants’ intentions to continue participating. Third, pedagogical content knowledge indirectly influences the intention to continue participating. Fourth, sports commitment mediated the relationship between pedagogical content knowledge and the intention to continue participating.
Conclusion: The pedagogical content knowledge of leisure sports instructors significantly affects participants’ sports commitment, which, in turn, plays a crucial role in influencing continued participation intention. Pedagogical content knowledge affects continued participation intention through the mediating role of sports commitment. Therefore, leisure sports instructors should develop professional pedagogical content knowledge to guide participants effectively and enhance the effectiveness of their lessons.
