The purpose of this study is to describe in detail the various meanings expressed by the (ラ)レテイル construction from the perspective of how the speaker construes changes in the object of action.
From the perspective of Cognitive Grammar (Langacker 2008), which assumes the cognitive ability to understand the same situation in various ways and that understanding the situation differently is also an important part of the meaning expressed by linguistic expressions, by describing the various meanings expressed by the (ラ)レテイル construction from the above consistent perspective, it is possible to not only explain how the various meanings expressed by the (ラ)レテイル construction are related to each other, but also to explain why the (ラ)レテイル construction expresses those meanings. Native Japanese speakers use the (ラ)レテイル construction to understand and express the changes that occur in the object of action in various ways, and the cognitive mechanism that allows them to understand the changes in the object of action in various ways (i.e., to express various meanings) explains why there are various meanings in the (ラ)レテイル construction in Japanese.
