This article explores the role of women in Russian literary salons, which flourished concurrently with the development of Russian literature in the first half of the nineteenth century. From the 1800s to the 1830s, as Russian literature became professionalized, the discourse about the position of women in literature and the boundaries set for women in the process of literary development began, and then the concept of “women’s literature” was formed. In this article, we examine the literary activities of Z.A. Volkonskaya, A.P. Elagina and K.K. Pavlova – the hostesses of the most famous Moscow’s salons – who greatly influenced Russian literature and journalism in the first half of the nineteenth century. Such salons were pivotal in the history of Russian literature: they were places where contemporary poets and writers interacted, they contributed to the formation of Russian intellectuals, and they gave birth to women writers and translators. Most importantly, women played an essential role in the process of refocusing Russian literature from literary salons to journalism. This article contends that knowledge of the literary activities of women in these salons is essential to a fuller understanding of all of nineteenth Russian literature.
