The skin is responsible for many important physiological functions, including pathogen defense, body temperature regulation, and detection of external stimuli. It is also exposed to various diseases throughout life, such as aging, injury, and acute or chronic wounds. Inspired by the adhesion mechanisms of mussels in marine environments, catechol has been widely incorporated into various biomaterials to achieve immediate and effective adhesion under physiological conditions. When incorporated into hydrogels for skin regeneration, catechol enhances site-specific biomaterial application, facilitating better contact with surrounding tissues to maximize re- generative effects. This review provides an overview of catechol-functionalized hydrogels for skin tissue regeneration, highlighting their applications in drug delivery and tissue engineering.
