We investigate the impact of unionization on income inequality in Korea between 1998 and 2022, employing Oaxaca and Ransom(OR) and Juhn–Murphy–Pierce(JMP) decomposition methods. Motivated by significant socio–economic shifts following the 1997 and 2008 crises, which drastically transformed the labor market structure, our analysis explores the role of labor unions. The theoretical framework posits that labor unions may exacerbate income inequality by preferentially benefiting workers in high– wage core, thereby sidelining vulnerable employees in the secondary labor market. Our findings lend support to the skepticism regarding the effectiveness of Korean labor unions in mitigating irrational income inequality. The results indicate that labor unions may inadvertently reinforce long–standing discriminatory practices, which have been resistant to traditional union strategies, especially in post–crisis contexts. This study contributes to the literature by offering new insights into the complex role of labor unions in income distribution following periods of significant economic upheaval.
