This paper attempts to understand abortion attitudes among women in the Republic of Korea, a country where abortion is simultaneously highly relied upon and publicly shamed. This paper examined how abortion is both stigmatized and normalized in South Korean culture and how women’s perception of other women’s abortion decisions is shaped by their understanding of the ideals of womanhood. The problems of this study are as follows. How does the simultaneous normalization and stigmatization of abortion inform abortion attitudes? In this paper, I identified three qualities that are associated with womanhood ideals: the embrace of the ideals of motherhood, the disclosure of an unintended pregnancy only to select confidants, and the responsibility for sexual encounters. The findings suggest that the simultaneous existence of stigmatized and normalized abortion culture can make it challenging for a woman to navigate an unintentional pregnancy.
