This paper examines the diachronic usage patterns of the ‘yixie(一些)’ construction, and the main conclusions are as follows:
First, ‘yixie(一些)’ first appeared during the Song Dynasty and maintained a low frequency of occurrence until the Yuan Dynasty. However, from the Ming Dynasty onward, its frequency of use increased, leading to more widespread usage.Variants with the same meaning and function include ‘yixier(一些兒)’, ‘yixiezi(一些子)’, ‘yixiexie(一些些)’ and ‘yixiege(一些個)’.
Second, In Classical Chinese, the primary syntactic functions of ‘yixie(一些)’ were as an attributive and an adverbial. As an attributive, it primarily modified non-count nouns, while as an adverbial, it mostly modified verbs or verb phrases.
Third, diachronically, ‘yixie(一些)’ was mainly used in negative sentences. The combination of ‘yixie(一些)’ with negative and scope adverbs to express complete negation first appeared during the Song Dynasty and persisted through the Qing Dynasty. From the Yuan to the Qing Dynasty, ‘yixie(一些)’ was used more frequently than ‘yidian(一點)’ to express complete negation, showing a different trend from modern Chinese.
Fourth, the adverbial usages of ‘cha yixier(差一些兒)’ and ‘cha yidianr(差一點兒)’ first appeared during the Ming Dynasty. However, both forms had very low frequencies of occurrence up until the Qing Dynasty.
