Although South Korea has maintained diplomatic relations with many Latin American countries for over 60 years, and both face-to-face and non-face-to-face interactions continue to grow, there remains a significant gap in research regarding South Korean’s perceptions of individual Latin American countries. This paper aims to characterize the negative country image that South Koreans hold of Chile and the factors influencing this perception. While previous studies on the country image of Latin American countries among South Koreans have primarily relied on surveys or analyses of media representations, such as broadcast programs and news, this study takes a different approach. It analyzed 2,403 online comments left on 27 news articles in South Korea about a Chilean comedy program that was accused of being racist in 2021. The comments were examined using Norman Fairclough’s three-dimensional model of critical discourse analysis. The results indicate that South Koreans’ negative country image of Chile is largely shaped by their perception of Chile as underdeveloped, with a low economic income level. While these images are partially a reflection of Western stereotypes, South Koreans’ strong developmentalist sense of superiority also plays a role as a local factor. The study suggests that for genuine progress in bilateral relations, South Koreans must move beyond their view based primarily on economic superiority and instead recognize and respect Chile’s identity and cultural diversity.
