유구한 전통을 지닌 비즈 주얼리는 권력과 부의 상징이자, 사회적 지위를 과시하는 수단으로 사용되어 왔다. 중세 시대에 기술의 발전으로 인해 성행하였으며 현대 사회에 들어 여러 양식과 트렌드를 거치며 예술적 영감과 수준 높은 장인 정신을 결합한 주얼리 디자인의 중요성을 강조하는 데 영향을 주었다.
비즈 주얼리는 지속적인 확장과 변화를 거듭하며 전통적 장식의 의미를 뛰어넘어 혁신과 동시대성을 지닌 예술적 가치가 뛰어난 작품으로 자리 잡게 되었다.
그러나 현대 비즈 주얼리에 대한 연구는 제한적으로 진행되고 있으며 자료가 미비한 실정이다. 본 연구는 현대 주얼리 창작과 개발을 중심으로 예술성을 심층적으로 탐구하여 비즈 주얼리에 대한 기초 자료를 마련하고자 한다. 또한, 동시대 주얼리 디자인에서 비즈 주얼리의 미적 가치를 분석하는 데 목적을 둔다. 다양한 경로 통해 수집한 문헌 및 자료를 활용하여 현대 비즈 주얼리를 분석하였다.
2장에서는 비즈에 대하여 정의하고 비즈의 역사를 고찰하였다. 기원전부터 사용된 비즈 공예는 중세 시대에 비약적인 발전을 이루었으며 미술공예운동 시기에는 실용적인 일상품에 적용되었다. 아르누보 시기에는 정교하고 화려한 디자인을 선보였으며 아르데코 시기에는 기하학적인 형태를 보이며 현대 비즈 주얼리의 기반을 닦았다. 비즈의 소재는 각종 광석, 금속, 기타 인공 소재로 제작된 무기 재료와 유기물을 소재로 제작된 유기 재료로 구분하여 연구하였다. 비즈는 가공, 성형, 연삭, 연마, 왁싱을 과정을 거쳐 완성되며 비즈의 연결은 줄, 직물, 금속을 사용할 수 있다.
본 연구는 비즈 주얼리의 역사적 발전과 현대적 변화를 고찰하며, 1920년부터 2020년까지 미국과 유럽의 비즈 주얼리 예술가들의 작품에 주된 초점을 맞추어 다양한 현대 비즈 주얼리 작가들의 작품을 현대적 관점에서 체계적으로 분석하고자 하였다. 현대 비즈 주얼리에 사용되는 조형 방식은 대칭, 반복, 기하학적 및 유기적 형태가 있으며 표현 기법으로 추상적 과장기법, 단순화 기법, 정교한 장식 기법이 있음을 알 수 있었다. 그리하여 현대 비즈 주얼리가 점차 독창적이며 표현 중심적인 디자인으로 변모함을 알 수 있었다.
비즈의 표현 매체로서의 잠재력과 연구적 가치를 탐구하고, 현대 비즈 주얼리가 지닌 풍부한 표현력을 확인하며 그 예술적 가치를 증명하고자 한다. 특히 현대 디자인에서 개성과 다양성이 중시되는 만큼, 본 연구가 현대 비즈 주얼리 창작의 발전과 다양성 확대에 있어 중요한 기초 자료를 제공할 것으로 기대한다.

Beaded jewelry, with its long tradition, has been used as a symbol of power and wealth, and as a means of showing off social status. It became popular in the Middle Ages due to technological advancements, and in modern society, it has influenced the emphasis on the importance of jewelry design that combines artistic inspiration and high-level craftsmanship through various styles and trends.
Beaded jewelry has continuously expanded and changed, transcending the meaning of traditional decoration and establishing itself as a work of outstanding artistic value with innovation and contemporaneity.
However, research on modern beaded jewelry is limited and there is insufficient data. This study aims to provide basic data on beaded jewelry by deeply exploring the artistry centered on the creation and development of modern jewelry. In addition, it aims to analyze the aesthetic value of beaded jewelry in contemporary jewelry design. We analyzed modern beaded jewelry using literature and data collected through various channels.
Chapter 2 defines beads and examines the history of beads. Bead crafts, which have been used since BC, made great strides in the Middle Ages and were applied to practical daily necessities during the Arts and Crafts Movement. During the Art Nouveau period, elaborate and splendid designs were presented, and during the Art Deco period, geometric shapes were presented, laying the foundation for modern bead jewelry. The materials of beads were studied by dividing them into inorganic materials made of various minerals, metals, and other artificial materials, and organic materials made of organic materials. Beads are completed through the process of processing, molding, grinding, polishing, and waxing, and the connection of beads can use strings, fabrics, and metals.
This study examines the historical development and modern changes of bead jewelry, and systematically analyzes the works of various modern bead jewelry artists from a modern perspective, focusing mainly on the works of American and European bead jewelry artists from 1920 to 2020. It was found that the formative methods used in modern bead jewelry include symmetry, repetition, geometric, and organic forms, and the expressive techniques include abstract exaggeration, simplification, and elaborate decoration. Thus, we were able to see that modern bead jewelry is gradually transforming into unique and expression-centered designs.
We seek to explore the potential and research value of beads as a medium of expression, confirm the rich expressive power of modern bead jewelry, and prove its artistic value. In particular, as individuality and diversity are valued in modern design, we expect that this study will provide important basic data for the development and expansion of diversity in the creation of modern bead jewelry.
