Air infiltration significantly impacts building energy consumption. The correlation factor provides a simplified representation of the leakage-infiltration relationship, facilitating the conversion of airtightness performance to natural infiltration performance by dividing the airtightness obtained through blower door tests by the correlation factors. The widely-accepted “rule of thumb” correlation factor is 20, with each country or region possessing unique regulations for correlation factors. However, in regions with substantial annual temperature fluctuations, infiltration rates vary seasonally, necessitating distinct correlation factors for diverse seasonal conditions.
This research investigates the association between natural infiltration rates and airtightness performance in edifices through long-term measurements in Korea, where the annual temperature variation is 30℃. Infiltration rates for the target spaces under various temperature differences ranged approximately from 0.2 to 1.0 h-1. The derived correlation factors ranged approximately from 40 to 122, surpassing the established “rule of thumb” value of 20, indicating a potential overestimation when converting blower door test values into natural infiltration rates. The correlation factor is inversely proportional to the square root of the temperature difference; thus, implementing a single correlation factor value derived from a solitary experiment or limited outdoor environmental conditions may result in significant errors in estimating infiltration rates due to seasonal alterations. The study advocates for the application of segmented correlation factors in regions with considerable annual temperature differences.
