In our country, the terrain is characterized by mountains evenly mixed with plains, resulting in many hilly areas even within cities—unlike in other nations. However, cities that include hilly terrains are mostly old cities formed before modernization. Planned cities or urban areas developed after the 1970s are predominantly composed of geometric road networks and rectangular lots suitable for flat land. Furthermore, during urban redevelopment or new city expansion, the terrain was altered using modern civil engineering techniques, and most lots were flattened. Therefore, even in hilly urban areas, individual lots are mostly flat, and the building layouts within these lots typically follow the principles suitable for flat terrain. The problem arises when multiple buildings form a complex: the building sites are constructed in a terraced manner, with large and small retaining walls built in between. These retaining walls, although adjacent to the buildings, are civil engineering structures that preemptively block the possibility of architectural layouts utilizing the characteristics of hilly terrain. In response, we aim to derive principles for arranging buildings suitable for our country’s hilly landscapes by architecturally interpreting hilly terrains and analyzing traditional temples and shrines that were designed using the site’s elevation changes.
