Purpose: This study aimed to examine the difficulties in word search and retrieval abilities of children with hearing impairments in the second to fifth grades of elementary school and compare them to children with normal hearing through a writing word fluency task. Method: Twelve children hearing impairments and twelve children with normal hearing, matched by grade, performed writing tasks on semantic word fluency (nouns: items purchasable at a supermarket; verbs: actions performed by people) and phonemic word fluency (/ㄱ/, /ㅂ/). Each child was instructed to write as many words as possible within one minute for each task. The data analyzed included the number of words, clusters, cluster sizes, and switching. Results: No differences were observed in phonemic word fluency. However, children with hearing impairments showed significantly lower performance in semantic word fluency than their counterparts. Specifically, their performance in the noun task, which included the number of words produced and the number of switchings, decreased. They also showed a decrease in the verb task, which involved the number of clusters and cluster sizes, in addition to the previously mentioned metrics. Conclusion: Children with hearing impairments not only have a limited expressive vocabulary but also face challenges in developing the categorization concepts necessary for vocabulary retrieval compared to children with normal hearing. Moreover, they may have deficiencies in employing strategies such as searching within the vocabulary, clustering, and switching, which are essential for word production.
